Rory McIlroy Returns to Defend Genesis Scottish Open Title

The Genesis Scottish Open is back on the calendar, and Rory McIlroy is right at the top of the marquee.

The newly-crowned Masters champion has confirmed he’ll tee it up at The Renaissance Club from July 10–13, aiming to recapture the title he first lifted in 2023.

McIlroy’s Winning Streak Rolls On

Few players have capped a career Grand Slam with quite the flourish McIlroy delivered at Augusta National.

Following his 2011 U.S. Open, PGA Championship wins in 2012 and 2014, and The Open in 2014, McIlroy outlasted Justin Rose in a play-off to claim his coveted Green Jacket.

It marked the third victory of his 2025 campaign—joining triumphs at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and THE PLAYERS Championship.

“I completed the career grand slam in memorable fashion earlier this month when I added the Green Jacket to my four previous Major victories at the 2011 U.S. Open, the US PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 and The Open in 2014,” the Northern Irishman reflected, his voice betraying just a hint of awe at his own achievements.

Now, carrying that momentum north of the border, he’s eager to chase another Genesis Scottish Open crown.

“Winning a national open is always special, and I’m pleased to have the chance to compete for another Genesis Scottish Open title,” McIlroy said. “It has certainly been a memorable year so far, and I’m looking forward to carrying on the momentum to the home of golf this summer.”

A Field Bristling with Talent

East Lothian will play host to more than just McIlroy’s quest for back-to-back Rolex Series glory. Also in the field are:

  • Justin Rose, the runner-up at Augusta and fellow European Ryder Cup stalwart
  • Robert MacIntyre, hot on McIlroy’s heels after his 2024 national Open triumph
  • Matt Fitzpatrick, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas, each with a Major in their trophy cabinet
  • Max Homa, six-time PGA TOUR winner and crowd favourite
  • Byeong Hun An, victorious at the 2024 Genesis Championship

…and a roster of yet-to-be-announced global stars, ensuring the Genesis Scottish Open will once again be the premier warm-up for The Open Championship.

What Makes The Renaissance Club Special

McIlroy made history at this very venue, becoming the first player ever to win the national opens of both Scotland and Ireland, along with The Open.

His birdie-birdie finish in 2023, edging out hometown hero MacIntyre by a single stroke, is already the stuff of legend. With the tournament played the week before The Open, the Genesis Scottish Open offers an ideal proving ground for those seeking links-form while basking in East Lothian’s dramatic dunes and panoramic vistas.
