At the charming Wittelsbacher Golfclub, amid the rolling landscapes of Neuburg an der Donau, Robin Williams sculpted a masterful five-under-par 67, seizing the lead by a stroke at the midpoint of the Big Green Egg German Challenge.
His performance was a study in precision, culminating in a scorecard boasting six birdies and only one bogey, bringing him to an enviable 11-under-par overall.
“It was very solid today,” Williams commented on his round, brimming with the confidence of a player in fine form.
“I’ve been playing well recently, and my putting was really good again. The greens are flush out here which is so nice because once you get the ball started on your line it has a pretty good chance of going in.”
In hot pursuit, just a stroke back, are South Africa’s Deon Germishuys, England’s David Horsey, and France’s Oihan Guillamoundeguy, each carding totals that keep the leaderboard tightly contested.
At just 22, Williams isn’t merely participating; he’s pushing the boundaries of what’s expected at a Challenge Tour event.
Williams’s ascent in the golfing world began with his debut on the DP World Tour at 16, followed by his representation of Europe at the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup.
Now positioned eighth on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, he’s eyeing a strong finish to secure his DP World Tour playing privileges for the upcoming season.
“It would mean everything to get my DP World Tour card at the end of the year because it would show that my consistency on the Challenge Tour throughout the year has paid off,” he shared, reflecting on his journey and ambitions.
“I’ve been playing on the Sunshine Tour for the last two seasons and to make the step up so quickly would be amazing.”
Also in the fray is Pierre Pineau of France, holding firm at eight under par, with Scotland’s Daniel Young, Dane John Axelsen, Italian Gregorio De Leo, and Spaniard Quim Vidal rounding out a competitive field just behind.
The tournament promises more excitement as it progresses into the third round, with Williams set to tee off in the final group alongside Horsey and Germishuys.
The third round will get under way at 8:00 am local time, with Williams teeing it up in the final group alongside Horsey and Germishuys at 11:44 am.
