UN Refugee Agency Teams Up with LIV Golf in Pioneering Effort for Refugee Well-being

Here’s something you don’t come across every day—a partnership between the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and LIV Golf.

Yep, you read that right. LIV Golf, usually known for shaking things up on the course, is now stepping up to make a real difference off the greens.

In a historic three-year agreement, LIV Golf has committed to improving the lives of up to one million forcibly displaced people across multiple continents.

And no, it’s not about teaching refugees how to sink birdies or eagle a par 5. It’s bigger than that.

This partnership isn’t your run-of-the-mill corporate sponsorship. We’re talking about using golf and other play-based activities to tackle some pretty hefty social issues—like improving access to sport and education for refugees and host communities.

The focus here is on integrating sport-for-protection programs that enhance social inclusion, create safe spaces, and boost educational outcomes.

In plain speak: they’re using the power of sport to make life a little brighter for people who’ve lost their homes.

“UNHCR believes strongly in the power of sport. We have seen firsthand that it can provide displaced children and youth with a sense of purpose and inspiration at a time of great personal upheaval,” said Khaled Khalifa, UNHCR’s Senior Advisor and Representative to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

“Sports bridge communities and fosters team spirit, well-being, and community cohesion, especially for people who have been forced to flee their homes and their host communities.

We are excited to announce the launch of this partnership with LIV Golf, which aims to make a significant positive impact on these communities.

By creating opportunities, fostering friendships, and establishing career pathways, we hope to help improve their lives.”

This isn’t just a feel-good initiative either. LIV Golf is putting its money where its mouth is, pledging a solid US$10 million over the next three years.

That’s serious cash aimed at improving the lives of those in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America.

The project will involve community centres, schools, refugee camps, and sports clubs, ensuring that everyone—regardless of age, gender, or ability—gets a chance to play.

Now, don’t think LIV Golf is just writing checks and calling it a day. Greg Norman, CEO and Commissioner of LIV Golf, made it clear that this is a hands-on deal.

“We’re proud to partner with the UN Refugee Agency to make a positive impact in the world through sport,” said Norman.

“LIV Golf’s ‘Potential Unleashed’ strategy is utilizing the game of golf as a force for positive change, and we are honoured to be the first professional golf organisation to work hand-in-hand with UNHCR to help deliver its meaningful programming and initiatives.”

This partnership aims to make golf more inclusive, but it’s also about creating real opportunities—whether that’s fostering friendships, building career pathways, or simply providing a sense of community.

Norman added, “Our league and players are committed to uplifting individuals and communities. This partnership is about expanding that reach and making an impact globally.”

This isn’t one of those corporate deals where they just slap a logo on something and call it a day.

The partnership between UNHCR and LIV Golf truly harnesses the genuine power of sports to unite people, establish safe environments, and make a tangible impact on lives.

Whether you’re a golf lover, passionate about humanitarian work, or simply curious about the role of sports in societal transformation, this collaboration is something you’ll want to keep an eye on.
