Félix Mory had the round of his life on the Lakes Course at INFINITUM, carding a jaw-dropping ten under par 61 to take the lead by a single stroke in the Final Stage Qualifying School.
The Frenchman’s flawless round included two eagles and six birdies, pushing him one stroke ahead of Austria’s Lukas Nemecz on a day when low scores were plentiful in Tarragona.
The 30-year-old has been on the brink of securing a spot on the DP World Tour for three seasons now.
After just missing out at the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final last week, Mory’s determined start shows he’s not ready to give up on his dream.
“Ten under is a special score,” Mory admitted, still savoring his round. “I think I’ve only managed that once before, so it’s something to remember. I didn’t miss much today—chipping in on 15 was a bonus, but overall, I played solidly.”
Mory made the most of the favorable conditions. The rain-soaked course was playing soft, with minimal wind, providing perfect scoring opportunities.
“The course is great, especially when you can hit mid-irons to set up birdie chances on the par fives,” he noted.
“You just need accuracy and good tee shots, and fortunately, I didn’t miss many greens today.”
Despite his spectacular start, Mory is keeping his focus steady as he heads into round two of six.
“I’m not thinking about the DP World Tour card just yet,” he said. “There are five rounds left, which is a lot of golf. I’ll stick to my game, play each round as it comes, and see where I end up.”
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Benjamin Rusch shot the best round on the Hills Course, carding eight birdies for a flawless 64 to tie for third with Callan Barrow from England at eight under.
Not far behind, three-time DP World Tour winner Edoardo Molinari, along with American golfers Michael Miller and Dan Erickson, and Wil Besseling from the Netherlands, finished seven under to sit in fifth place.
Round two gets underway tomorrow at 9:00 am, with Mory hitting the course at 9:55 am, joined by New Zealand’s Sam Jones and Ireland’s Max Kennedy.
With five rounds still left, there’s a lot of golf to play, and you can feel the pressure building as everyone fights to claim their spot on the DP World Tour.
