Bob Vokey is a name that resonates throughout the golfing world, and rightly so.
From his very first Spin Milled design to the cutting-edge models trusted by the majority of today’s top pros, Bob Vokey has transformed the short-game landscape with a dedication to craftsmanship that borders on obsession.
Titleist’s short film, “Making the Modern Wedge | Bob Vokey and the Spin Milled Story,” offers a riveting behind-the-scenes look at how these remarkable clubs came to dominate gap, sand, and lob wedge spots on the PGA TOUR—an astonishing 56 percent of them, to be precise.
In 2024 alone, players wielding Vokey wedges locked down 30 PGA TOUR events, including three major championships.
That kind of success only comes when talented folks push the boundaries of design year after year, experiment after experiment until every last groove is tuned to perfection.
The tale unfolds back in 2001 when the Spin Milled project first took shape. You’ll see how that inaugural prototype made jaws drop on tour the moment it appeared.
Suddenly, wedge shots weren’t the same old floaty lobs that drifted softly onto the green. A new era was born—one of low-flying, high-spinning magic.
“You used to play wedge shots, you’d flight it up high and land it in soft,” said Corey Gerrard, Director of Marketing for Vokey Wedges.
“All of a sudden, you get a Spin Milled in your hand, it was almost opposite. You would flight the ball in low, penetrating, aggressive ball flight, it takes one big hop and stops next to the pin.
It became the shot that everyone wanted to hit, that low one, and it’s still the recipe for a great wedge shot.”
Of course, no success story worth telling comes without a fair share of challenges.
From the 2007 groove rule change to the global task of servicing hundreds of tour players, Bob Vokey and his team faced every trial head-on.
With each hurdle, they found fresh motivation to innovate, to refine, to push the wedge concept even further.
If you’re ready for a front-row seat to golf history, pull up a chair and watch “Making the Modern Wedge | Bob Vokey and the Spin Milled Story.”
It’s a rare glimpse into how a singular vision—coupled with unrelenting perseverance—created one of the most iconic wedge lines in the sport.
