SuperSport Ladies Challenge showcased top-tier talent at Sun City’s Gary Player Country Club course, as Nadia van der Westhuizen battled a challenging layout to secure a one-shot victory on Friday.
In a final round that delivered both tension and triumph, the South African starcarded her way to a two-over-par 74, clinching her second Sunshine Ladies Tour title with a total score of three under par.
Van der Westhuizen’s round was anything but straightforward. She started off in control, cruising through the first five holes without much fuss.
But golf has a funny way of turning steady into shaky in the blink of an eye — and that’s exactly what happened as she hit the tougher stretch on the back nine.
“It was very steady in the beginning. I hit the ball well,” she recalled, sounding as if she was describing a pleasant stroll before stepping into quicksand.
Then on the last couple of holes on the front nine I started to miss with my driver a little bit, and missed the fairways. If that happens on this course you are basically dead,” she candidly explained.
The course, renowned for its pristine condition yet formidable challenge, spared few competitors this week, with only three golfers finishing under par.
Despite a few missteps—including two bogeys and a birdie in quick succession and a frustrating double bogey on the 15th—Van der Westhuizen kept her composure.
“It was the driver again on the 15th. I think it was a little bit of nerves as well. But I tried to stay calm and collected for the rest of the round. I’m very happy with the result,” she remarked.
Not far behind, Kaiyuree Moodley delivered a stellar performance to finish second on two under par, marked by a closing 69, while Casandra Alexander claimed third place on one under par with a final round of 73.
Rookie Moodley, who had already made waves by finishing tied third at last week’s Jabra Ladies Classic, continues to impress with her consistent play.
Reflecting on her victory, Van der Westhuizen shared a personal note that resonated deeply with many aspiring golfers.
“This one is absolutely so special for me. It’s not only in a golf aspect but definitely a personal one.
I went to Q-School last year and missed my Ladies European Tour card by three shots. So, winning this one means so much in bringing some confidence back.”
The SuperSport Ladies Challenge not only tested the mettle of its competitors but also served as a stage for narratives of perseverance and personal triumph, encapsulating the true spirit of competitive golf.
