Sunningdale Golf Club, one of the most esteemed venues in golf, will once again host The Senior Open, marking its fourth time as the venue for Europe’s premier Senior Major Championship.
The event will take place from July 24-27, 2025, on the Old Course at Sunningdale.
The Old Course first welcomed The Senior Open in 2009. That inaugural tournament saw American Loren Roberts edge out compatriot Fred Funk and Ireland’s Mark McNulty in a thrilling play-off.
The course then hosted the championship again in 2015, where Marco Dawson emerged victorious, narrowly defeating the legendary Bernhard Langer.
After a hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, The Senior Open returned to Sunningdale in 2021.
The event was memorable for Welshman Stephen Dodd, who clinched his first Senior Major title by holding off a strong challenge from past champion Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
Beyond hosting The Senior Open, Sunningdale Golf Club has a rich history of major events.
The venue has welcomed prestigious tournaments such as the British Masters, the European Open, The Seve Trophy, Walker Cup, and the AIG Women’s Open.
It has also served as a qualifying site for The Open Championship and will host the Curtis Cup later this year.
Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at The R&A, praised Sunningdale, saying, “Sunningdale is a world-class venue and has a renowned reputation for staging many of the sport’s greatest championships and international matches.
We look forward to returning there for The Senior Open in 2025 and enjoying another spectacle of golf.”
Edward Kitson, Championship Director of The Senior Open, echoed the excitement, stating, “We are very pleased to announce The Senior Open’s return to the incredible Old Course at Sunningdale.
The Senior Open offers us the unique opportunity to visit both traditional Open venues and other world-class golf courses in the British Isles.
Sunningdale is consistently ranked as one of the best courses in the world, not just the United Kingdom, and we are all looking forward to returning in 2025.”
Paul Chase-Gardener, Chairman of Sunningdale, expressed the club’s enthusiasm, saying, “We are honoured to be hosting The Senior Open in 2025.
We look forward to welcoming the world’s leading over 50s as they test themselves against the unique challenges posed by our renowned Old Course.”
