Rory McIlroy centre stage at 2025’s Masters in Augusta, as the charismatic Northern Irishman became just the sixth golfer to complete the career Grand Slam with a nail-biting playoff victory.
By claiming his fifth major and 29th career PGA TOUR win, the buzz around what McIlroy had in his Masters winning bag lightened up fairways and fuelled countless practice-range experiments across the globe.

Golf’s beloved showman didn’t just snare the elusive Grand Slam—he also joined a historic club as the 21st player to amass five major titles.
Adding to the drama, Rory became only the third player in tournament history to rally back from seven strokes down after the opening round.
With his TP5 golf ball and Spider Tour X putter in the bag, he forever etched his name among the game’s greatest.
A Comeback for the Ages
Prior to his season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy switched to the TP5 golf ball, seeking a lower launch with irons and wedges plus more spin around the greens.
That decision sparked a spectacular run, featuring victories at Pebble Beach, THE PLAYERS, and now Augusta.
The decisive moment came on the first playoff hole, where McIlroy wielded his Milled Grind 4 50° wedge from 125 yards.
He elegantly shaped his shot well past the hole, then watched the TP5 zip back down the slope to a mere two feet.
The putt? Sunk with ice in his veins using the Spider Tour X, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime victory and capping his historic Augusta triumph.
A Historic Run with TP5 Golf Ball

With the TP5 in play, McIlroy became the third player in history to win THE PLAYERS and Augusta in the same season, joining fellow Team TaylorMade athletes Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler.
Reflecting on the immediate benefits of switching to TP5, McIlroy noted better control on half and three-quarter shots as well as improved performance in windy conditions: “The first time I worked on it a lot was at Pebble Beach, and we had to contend with some really windy conditions there at the weekend and played well in that.
When the conditions come like that, I just feel like I’m a lot better prepared to handle them. It’s flighting the sort of wedges and short irons, which have been the issue, and I feel like I’ve been able to rectify that.”
He showcased that newfound trajectory on Augusta’s Par 5 15th, lashing a 6-iron from 205 yards to six feet for an eagle in the third round, then rifling a 7-iron from 209 yards the very next day to set up a birdie.
“He’s always been a high hitter of the golf ball and TP5 launches a little bit lower than TP5x,” —Adrian Reitveld, Senior Tour Manager “He can couple that with the right spin and speed and it’s a golf ball he’s very comfortable hitting high.”
Reitveld also highlighted the TP5’s consistency of spin—vital for a precise iron game—which grants McIlroy the confidence to shape daring shots under pressure: “He played the TP5x because it gave him a real consistency of spin at a low spin rate,” said Rietveld.
“He found that in TP5 as well and felt he really could play both golf balls. Although TP5 spins more, it’s the consistency of the spin which gives it the predictability to hit the shots he wants.”
Trusting the Ball, Not the Mechanics
McIlroy explained that switching focus from his technique to what the ball actually does has been a liberating change:
“I would say that for that period of time at the end of last year that was the most important thing and not actually what the ball was doing.
Where now what the ball is doing is the most important thing and then that’s sort of secondary.
I think to execute a hundred per cent, I think there’s very little thought for technique in there; it’s just a matter of visualising and sort of letting your body do it.
I think all of that combined, you know, with the fact that I feel like I’m controlling my ball much better in the wind these days, I think that’s a big part of it, as well.”
At Augusta, McIlroy replaced the No. 1 on his TP5 with “RORS” for good luck—proof you can personalise your own gear via the MySymbol program just like the champion.
