Ryder Cup Europe has officially unveiled the qualification process for the 2025 European Ryder Cup team, set to defend its title against the United States at Bethpage, New York, from September 26-28, 2025.
In a notable departure from previous years, Ryder Cup Europe, in consultation with Captain Luke Donald, has streamlined the qualification process.
The DP World Tour’s Tournament Committee has ratified the new approach, which now features a single Ryder Cup Points List.
This list will be based on points earned through a newly implemented tournament banding structure.
Points Breakdown by Tournament Category
The following table outlines the points distribution for various tournament categories during the 2024/2025 qualification period:
Tournament Category | Points Available |
---|---|
Major Championships | 5,000 points |
2025 PGA TOUR Signature Events / The Players / FedExCup Playoffs | 3,000 points |
DP World Tour Rolex Series Events | 2,000 points |
2025 PGA TOUR Regular FedExCup Events | 2,000 points |
DP World Tour ‘Back 9’ Events | 1,500 points |
DP World Tour ‘Global Series’ Events | 1,000 points |
2025 PGA TOUR ‘Opposite Field’ Events | 1,000 points |
This unified points list replaces the previous World Points List and European Points List, simplifying the qualification process.
Key Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Unchanged elements of the qualification process include:
- Eligibility: Players must be European (as defined by the IGF National policy) and members of the DP World Tour.
- Team Composition: The team will consist of the top six players from the Ryder Cup Points List and six Captain’s Picks.
Timeline for the Qualification Process
The journey to qualify for the 2025 team begins at the Betfred British Masters, hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at The Belfry from August 29 to September 1, 2024.
The historic venue has previously seen European triumphs in 1985 and 2002, and a tied match in 1989, with Faldo participating in both the 1985 and 1989 matches.
The qualification window closes on August 24, 2025, at the final DP World Tour event before the Ryder Cup, the details of which will be announced with the 2025 DP World Tour schedule next month.
Additional Qualification Details
- DP World Tour Exclusivity: From August 29, 2024, through the end of the year, Ryder Cup points will only be earned in DP World Tour events.
- PGA TOUR Events: From January 1, 2025, to August 17, 2025, points can be earned in PGA TOUR events.
- Rolex Series Event Exclusions: Points will not be awarded for events scheduled against Rolex Series events, except for the 2025 ISCO Championship, which overlaps with the Genesis Scottish Open.
- Zurich Classic: Points will be awarded to each player in the Zurich Classic team if both players are European, with 50% of the points for each position allocated to each player.
Captain Luke Donald expressed his enthusiasm: “I am delighted to confirm the details of the qualification process for our 2025 Ryder Cup team.
A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to get to this point and everything is now focused on doing all we can to retain the trophy in New York next September.”
Guy Kinnings, CEO of PGA European Tour, and Managing Partner of Ryder Cup Europe LLP, added: “This is a major milestone moment in our journey to the 2025 Ryder Cup.
This is without question a much cleaner and simpler qualification system than the ones utilised in previous years and we thank Luke and his Vice Captains Edoardo Molinari and Thomas Bjørn for their vital input over the past few months.”
