As we roll into the weekend at the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB, George Coetzee finds himself in familiar territory—right at the sharp end of the leaderboard with a chance to notch up yet another Sunshine Tour win.
The DNi Tour Championship isn’t just the season’s final curtain call; it’s shaping up to be a proper nail-biter, with players jostling for position and fans buzzing for a finish that promises more drama than a soap opera in a lightning storm.
Coetzee is riding high after posting a bogey-free 65 in Friday’s second round, putting him on a commanding 12 under par.
Hot on his trail is Daniel Van Tonder, currently topping the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy, who chipped in a solid four-under-par 68 to reach 10 under par. The stage is set for a riveting contest where every stroke counts.
Fresh off last week’s win at the Serengeti Playoffs, George Coetzee is flying high and eyeing a rare double like a man who’s just remembered how good winning feels.
Friday threw a soggy curveball at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, with waterlogged greens pushing back tee times and threatening to turn the round into a mud-wrestling match.
But Coetzee, cool as you like, adjusted his game with the kind of poise that says, “I’ve been here before—just watch this.”
“The golf course has been pretty wet the whole week. It doesn’t change the way we play. It just made us a little more aware,” Coetzee said.
Reflecting on his measured approach, he continued, “It was pretty solid. I learned my lessons in the first round and played a little more conservative. Patience was really key – waiting for opportunities and not trying to force it. That approach kind of spilled over to the front-nine. I played pretty well.”
Having clawed his way back from injury to capture his 15th Sunshine Tour title, Coetzee is clearly relishing the moment.
“Last week was very much a surprise for me having that much form. I am trying to just appreciate it coming here, not neglecting it and trying to make the best of it,” he explained, underscoring his focus on the challenges ahead.
With this tournament marking both the final event of the season and the closing chapter of the new Courier Guy Playoffs Series, the tension is palpable. “It should be very exciting I think.
We all keep an eye on what everybody does as we play. You just need to play well enough to be in the mix come the last three holes on Sunday,” Coetzee remarked, hinting at the drama that the closing holes might bring.
Not to be overlooked, Jonathan Broomhead also had a standout day. His bogey-free round of six-under-par 66 lifted him to nine-under for the tournament, propelling him into third place—just three shots off the lead—and adding another layer of intrigue to this high-stakes showdown.
