Golf’s European Nations Cup is set to return with a bang, and England Golf has just revealed its four-man squad determined to lift the trophy once again.
The prestigious competition will unfold from 26-29 March at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande in Spain, where 21 nations will square off in a 72-hole stroke play format.
Each day, the three best 18-hole scores from the four players on each team will be added together, producing a combined total that decides the eventual victors.
To sweeten the stakes, golfers are also competing for individual honors. The player with the lowest overall score across the four days walks away with solo bragging rights, following in the footsteps of global superstars like Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, and Shane Lowry.
England has its own history of success in this event—12 victories since the first Nations Cup in 1998, which is eight more than Spain’s four.
Notable individual champions include Gary Wolstenholme MBE, who claimed the title four times, as well as Francesco Molinari, Marcel Siem, and current England Golf Performance Director Nigel Edwards.
Recent winners from England include Tom Sloman (2019) and Todd Clements (2018).
Though John Gough narrowly missed out on individual glory in 2023 with a runners-up finish, his strong showing was enough to help England capture its most recent Nations Cup triumph.
England Golf Men’s Performance Manager Ben Gorvett said: “We’ve had great success in the past at this event and we don’t want 2025 to be any different.
We have a strong team, with Eliot Baker, Dan Hayes and Tom Osborne having already had a taste of winning this year, and they are complemented by our English Amateur champion, Harley Smith, on his return from injury.
“The team is ready to face the challenge that Sotogrande poses, and they are eager to complete against Europe’s finest golfers yet again.”
With a star-studded history, ample drama, and the added punch of both a team and individual contest, Golf’s European Nations Cup never fails to deliver.
If this year’s showdown in Sotogrande carries on tradition, expect elite shot-making, white-knuckle finishes, and maybe even one more triumph to add to England’s remarkable record.
After all, there’s a reason this tournament has stood for decades as a proving ground for the next generation of golfing greats.
