Essex Triumphs at the 2024 County Golf Championships

Well, wouldn’t you Adam and Eve it? Essex has gone and done it again! For the first time since 2009, the Essex golf team hoisted the Men’s County Championship trophy high, making it only their second win in what feels like a lifetime.

The final clash at Whittington Heath Golf Club was more than just a match—it was an epic narrative unfolding before our eyes.

Picture it: a crisp Sunday morning, the tension thick enough to cut with a wedge. Essex was on a mission to triumph over Gloucestershire and seize the championship, while off in another corner, Lincolnshire was in the thick of it against Cumbria, praying for a win that would bring home their first title since the days of disco. Yet, as luck would have it, the spotlight swivelled back to Essex.

Enter Will Horne, our hero, trailing by three holes and staring down defeat. But this wasn’t his first rodeo.

In a turn worthy of the silver screen, he reversed his fortunes, delivered a brilliant 2&1 win, and secured the championship for Essex just as the balance of power began to tilt towards Gloucestershire.

It was a heart-stopper of a finale that left Lincolnshire in second and Cumbria sneaking past Gloucestershire for third place.

Essex Captain Paul Prebble was buzzing, hardly able to contain his excitement. “I’m over the moon! We’ve got such a fantastic team, and to come here and snatch victory?

It’s huge for us. It’s rare we get this far, so it feels incredibly special,” he said. “Every single match was a cliffhanger. I’m all out of fingernails and nerves, but hey, it was our time to shine.”

Essex crowned County Champions 2024

Zach Chegwidden, about to step into the pro leagues, couldn’t have dreamed of a better send-off. “Playing for Essex one last time and winning? It’s unreal.

Finishing my amateur days with my mates, at my home club, in my home county—it’s just perfect. We can’t party just yet, but when we do, it’s going to be legendary!”

This win isn’t just a notch on the belt for Essex; it’s a story they’ll tell over and over, a legendary performance that’ll echo through Essex’s golfing lore.

They might not be throwing their hats in the air just yet, but when they do, it’s going to be a bash to remember.
