In a display of sheer brilliance, England Boys’ star Daniel Hayes clinched the 2024 Carris Trophy with a masterful performance on the final day at Ormskirk Golf Club.
Hayes, representing Bramhall, burst out of the gates with impressive early momentum, notching three birdies in his first four holes.
His final-round score of 67 (-4) contributed to an overall total of -16, securing a two-shot victory over France’s Arthur Carlier.
Despite Carlier’s valiant effort—including three birdies from holes 8 through 11—a couple of late bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes dashed his hopes.
The Frenchman concluded his tournament with a round of 69 (-2), finishing in second place.
Reflecting on his victory, Hayes (pictured above) shared, “It’s big. It feels good. I’ve had a lot of 2nd-places over the past year and a half so it feels nice to get over the line.
I think the key was just keeping it in play by taking two-irons and three-woods when you needed to instead of driver, as you can make some big scores from the rough.
I probably won’t do much celebrating as I’ve got to head to the English Amateur so I’ll be straight back into it!”
Young Monty Holcombe (Walton Heath) demonstrated his talent by finishing in 3rd place with a final score of -11, while Teesside’s Thomas Hartshorne took 4th place.
The 14-year-old Hartshorne’s impressive performance was highlighted by a final-round score of 67 (-4), earning him the Hazards Salver as the top under-16 player from Great Britain & Ireland.
Finishing tied for 5th were Lewy Hayward (Marlborough) and Dutch player Scott Woltering, both with totals of -9.
The standout round of the day came from Toby Peters (Thorpe Hall), who dazzled with nine birdies in his round to shoot a joint-course record of -6.
Peters joined Riki Matsumoto (Japan), Denny Kloeth (Netherlands), Brandon Skidmore (Cotswold Hills), and Henry Styles (Romford) in achieving this feat.
