Charley Hull is keen to go one better at this week’s Aramco Team Series – London, 14-16 July, after a bold bid for U.S. Women’s Open glory saw her end up in a tie for second spot last Sunday.
The English star, 27, closed out at Pebble Beach with a stunning six-under-par round of 66 and has understandable confidence in her game ahead of the Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – London, which starts tomorrow at Centurion Club.
Hull said: “I like this golf course. It’s a good golf course. I played here about a month ago – I actually played off the back, back tees that the men play off in LIV (LIV Golf London) – and I shot five-under.
So hopefully I can do that again off the forward tees this week. I’d love to win this tournament. I feel like my game is in good shape.”
Hull’s brilliant display in the U.S Women’s Open marked a welcome return to top form after a quiet spell.
She said: “I had a good start to the season – came second. Then I’d missed a couple of cuts because my swing wasn’t quite there.
I was ill as well, so I had to take four weeks off, but slowly started to get better and now I feel match-fit again. It all clicked into place.”
The opening two days of the $1m Aramco Team Series showcase 36 teams vying for pole position. Each quartet has a captain who picked a team-mate at a players’ draft, while they are also allocated a further professional along with an amateur.
The final holes 18 of the tournament are for professionals only, with the top-60 and ties making it through after two rounds.
Hull’s amateur player this week is former England international and Manchester United ace Teddy Sheringham.
Her fellow European Solheim Cup star Leona Maguire will play in a quartet with legendary jockey Sir Anthony McCoy. Pop star Ronan Keating will aim to hit the high notes as part of the team led by American golfer Ryann O’Toole. Former Women’s British Open champion Georgia Hall picked Scottish golfer Kylie Henry and was allocated Lea Anne Bramwell and Michael Austick.
Hall has had a couple of near-misses in her previous attempts to win the Aramco Team Series – London, finishing fourth and second in the last two years.
The Englishwoman said: “I love coming back to play this event – a lot of great memories and great results here. I feel confident going into this week and obviously got a fairly strong field again, same as last year.”
For Hall, who plays much of her golf on the LPGA Tour, the tournament presents a welcome chance to tee it up on home soil in front of friends and family.
She added: “It means a lot. I think I get a bit more excited to play in front of them. Some people haven’t seen me hit a ball for like a year, so it’s really nice.
And in the evenings, I get to take my mind off golf a little bit easier than I do when I’m just going back to the hotel in the States. I just love being home while I can, so extra happy about that.”
The first round commences at Centurion Club at 6.45am with former England cricketer and ex-national team selector James Taylor joining the team of German professional Leonie Harm.
Tickets to witness the world’s best competing and to be a part of all the activities happening at Centurion Club from 14 to 16 July 2023 are available through Universe to purchase adult tickets priced at £5 for Friday and £10 for the weekend, while those under 18 can attend for free.
