Ayora Takes Commanding Lead at Vierumäki Finnish Challenge

Angel Ayora

Angel Ayora delivered a standout performance at the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge, catapulting himself into a two-shot lead heading into the weekend.

The Spaniard, who started the second round four shots off the pace, unleashed an impressive eight-under-par 64 at Vierumäki Resort to surge to 12-under overall.

This puts him two strokes clear of his closest rivals: Italian Pietro Bovari, Frenchmen Alexander Levy and Sébastien Gros, and Sweden’s David Nyfjäll and Oliver Gillberg.

The 19-year-old Ayora, who began his round on the back nine, posted a solid two-under at the turn with three birdies and a single bogey.

However, it was his back nine where he truly shone, racking up four birdies before capping his round with a magnificent eagle on the 18th.

“I’m very happy today because I played very well,” Ayora shared after his round.

“My game was strong in all areas and hopefully I can carry this on into the weekend. It was great to finish with an eagle.

I hit a very good drive and then a very solid iron shot right next to the pin and then made the putt.”

Ayora has found a course that suits his aggressive playstyle, particularly with the driver.

“This course suits my game because I can be aggressive with the driver and I have been rolling the ball great on the greens.

My irons were really good today and I managed to create a lot of birdie opportunities for myself and then my putter was hot.”

Looking ahead, Ayora plans to maintain his composure and stay patient. “I’m going to be patient tomorrow and hopefully I can see my putts drop again,” he added.

“I hope to have a strong finish over the weekend, or a win would be fantastic. I need a few more good tournaments if I want to achieve my goal of securing promotion to the DP World Tour.”

Meanwhile, overnight leader Mark Power, Scotland’s Ryan Lumsden, Spain’s Quim Vidal, and Swedish players Christofer Blomstrand and Niklas Lemke are all tied for seventh at nine-under-par.

As the competition heats up, the third round kicks off at 7:30 am local time, with Ayora set to tee off in the final group alongside Bovari and Levy at 11:41 am.
