Joshua Grenville-Wood is gearing up to clinch his inaugural professional win at the Abu Dhabi Challenge this week, marking a significant milestone in his career as the Road to Mallorca event series makes its way to his homeland, the UAE, for consecutive tournaments.
Having showcased his prowess in last year’s Abu Dhabi Challenge with a commendable tie for second at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, the 26-year-old is poised to leverage his familiarity with the local terrain once again, particularly at the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting, and Golf Club. Grenville-Wood perceives this course as ideally suited to his power-packed style of play.
Grenville-Wood said, “This week is a great opportunity for me to finally get a professional win under my belt at a course I’ve been playing since 2019.
I’ve come close to winning a couple of times now, and I know I’ve got the game to do it.
Al Ain is a big hitter’s paradise, and I know where the good spots to hit it and the better misses are.
The putting surfaces can be quite tricky here because they’re slopey but don’t break as much as you think.”
Residing in Dubai for the past five years, Grenville-Wood has capitalized on the chance to represent the UAE and the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) since last year.
He attributes much of his progress to the pristine golf courses and favourable weather conditions prevalent in the UAE.
Reflecting on his journey, he shares, “I first visited Dubai in 2015 and instantly fell in love with the place, ever since then I’ve wanted to make it my home.
Moving out here full-time and representing the EGF has been such a boost, and I’ve never looked back.
You can constantly work on improving your game during the winter, it makes such a big difference with preparation for the season.”
Grenville-Wood joins a formidable lineup in Al Ain this week, rubbing shoulders with esteemed golfers such as 2012 European Ryder Cup victor and former Vice-Captain Nicolas Colsaerts, seven-time DP World Tour champion Alvaro Quiros, and Road to Mallorca Number One Mikael Lindberg.
The tournament kicks off with round one commencing at 6:30 am local time, with Grenville-Wood slated to tee off at 12:40 pm alongside Colsaerts and Road to Mallorca Number Two Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, the recent victor at the Kolkata Challenge in India.
