J.J. Spaun’s U.S. Open Setup: Clubs, Ball, and Apparel

In a U.S. Open for the ages, where the rough was meaner than a mother-in-law with a martini and the greens faster than gossip at a country club, J.J. Spaun delivered the kind of magic that doesn’t just win majors—it cements legacies.

On Sunday afternoon at Oakmont Country Club, with the rain swirling and nerves tighter than a tour van’s sock drawer, Spaun rolled in a jaw-dropping 64-foot birdie on the 72nd hole.

That rainbow of a putt sealed a two-shot victory at the 2025 U.S. Open and gave the 34-year-old his maiden major title—in just his second appearance at this championship.

It was the longest putt made all week and, in true dramatic fashion, the one that mattered most.

“I never thought I would be here holding this trophy,” Spaun admitted, cradling it like a newborn.

“I’ve always had aspirations and dreams, but like I said a few months ago, I never knew what my ceiling was. I never knew how good I could be, but I’m just proud I’ve been resilient in my career and pushed through a lot of things.”

And what a way to show it.

After opening Sunday’s round with a front-nine 40—five over par and more wounded than a soggy scorecard—it looked like Spaun’s challenge was done and dusted. But following a lengthy weather delay, he returned to the course like a man with something to prove and rattled off a back-nine 32, capped with that unforgettable birdie bomb at 18.

The final score? One-under-par for the week. That made Spaun the only man in the entire field to finish under par—a brutal testament to Oakmont’s championship pedigree and to Spaun’s unshakable nerve.

Throughout the week, Spaun leaned on a rock-solid short game, ranking top 20 in strokes gained around the greens and T9 in greens in regulation.

His trusty Srixon ZXi irons and Cleveland Golf RTX wedges got a serious workout, especially when Oakmont’s fescue and furrows tried to chew him up.

What He Wore: Style in the Storm

Spaun didn’t just win in style—he wore it. Sporting a red, white, and blue polo from Puma Golf’s Burgh collection on Sunday—a nod to the host city of Pittsburgh—Spaun was both patriotic and prepared.

His Mattr polo, Dealer Tailored Pant, and Stretch Belt in deep navy kept him sharp through every swing, squall, and sigh.

Down below, it was the PUMA Ignite Elevate 2 Tour shoes doing the heavy lifting, delivering traction that held like a congressional filibuster through Oakmont’s slippery slopes.

“Despite the extreme conditions this week, Puma gave me everything I needed to persevere out here at Oakmont,” Spaun said. “Especially shoes that provided incredible traction and stability with so much water on the ground.”

Ian Barrett, VP of Marketing at Cobra Puma Golf, summed it up best:
“We’re all proud to see him secure the win wearing Puma. J.J. just proved that you can deliver the ultimate performance, in the toughest conditions, without sacrificing style or comfort.”

What Was in the Bag: Srixon Sharpness

Here’s a look at the tools Spaun used to carve up Oakmont’s concrete fairways and glassy greens:

  • Srixon ZXi5 Iron (4i)
  • Srixon ZXi7 Irons (5i-PW)
  • Cleveland Golf RTX ZipCore Wedge (50°)
  • Cleveland Golf RTZ Wedge (54° FULL)
  • Cleveland Golf RTX 6 ZipCore (60° LOW)
  • Srixon Z-STAR DIAMOND Golf Ball

To mark the victory, Srixon is extending its major golf ball promotion through June 22, giving everyday hacks and hopefuls the chance to try the same model Spaun used to make major history.

From Underdog to Major Champion

This win marks just Spaun’s second career PGA Tour victory and his first top-20 finish in a major.

He now vaults into sixth place in the FedExCup rankings and earns entry to the rest of the year’s big-ticket events. Not bad for a guy who just a few months ago wasn’t sure if he belonged at golf’s top table.

But at Oakmont, a course that has ruined more careers than a Vegas weekend, Spaun found clarity, control, and ultimately, catharsis.

Now, J.J. Spaun is more than a contender. He’s a U.S. Open champion. And he did it the hard way—Oakmont’s way.
