Golf in South Africa has always been a melting pot for extraordinary talent, and nowhere was this more evident than at the inaugural Waterfall City Tournament of Champions, supported by Attacq and WCMC.
This prestigious showdown at Royal Johannesburg’s famed East Course returns from 22-25 May as the first event of the Sunshine Tour’s new 2025/26 season—an occasion no true golf fan can afford to miss.
Last year’s champion, Louis Albertse, has fond memories of this tournament and the competitive spark it ignited, especially with Sunshine Ladies Tour professional Casandra Alexander finishing tied second.
“It was a great event. I enjoyed the golf course and the challenge, and to come out as the winner was special,” said Albertse, who pocketed R1 million in first-place prize money.
Reflecting on the unique blend of male and female professionals on the same stage, he added, “It was great to compete with the Sunshine Ladies Tour professionals, and Casandra pushed us quite close that week. The talent in South African golf is very deep.”
Indeed, the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions is a beacon of inclusivity, uniting a diverse field of amateurs and professionals—men and women alike—alongside golfers from the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA).
In the words of Albertse, “The tournament is a great showcase of what South Africa is doing in golf and the depth of our game.”
With another R1 million going to this year’s winner, and bragging rights on the line for the Sunshine Tour’s and Sunshine Ladies Tour’s brightest stars, the 2025 edition promises even more unforgettable moments.
This year’s lineup is set to be just as innovative and inclusive, welcoming champions from the Sunshine Tour and Sunshine Ladies Tour, top performers from the Papwa Sewgolum Class, the Betway Big Easy Tour, and the Africa Amateur, plus the leading GolfRSA amateur and five wild card entries.
While the amateurs and professionals compete in 72 holes of stroke play, the SADGA golfers will test their mettle over 36 holes of medal play.
Expect comprehensive TV coverage on SuperSport Channel 213 Golf, so even if you can’t be there in person, you won’t miss a swing.
Albertse believes this event is the perfect springboard for the season. “It’s a great way to start the season.
I came into the event on the back of a good season, and then moving into the new season with a win and going overseas after that was a nice confidence boost to show me what I’m capable of.”
The tournament owes its success to partners that share the same spirit of innovation.
Willie Vos, CEO of Waterfall City Management Company, expressed his pride at joining forces with the Sunshine Tour: “We are very proud to be associated with the Sunshine Tour, which strives for excellence, as do Waterfall City Management Company and our associates.
We also appreciate the innovative format of the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions.
It echoes the innovation we apply to both the design and management of our city, which aligns perfectly with our mission of creating a place where people love to be.”
Michael Clampett, Asset and Property Management Executive at Attacq, emphasized the values that unite them: “We are excited to welcome the Sunshine Tour back to Waterfall City.
This tournament not only showcases South Africa’s exceptional golf talent but also embodies the values of inclusivity and opportunity that Attacq champions.
We’re proud to partner with SADGA and the Sunshine Tour to bring this event to life and enabling all passionate golfers to participate in a prestigious televised golfing tournament.”
