Sun City Challenge action kicked off in style on Wednesday at Sun City, where South Africa’s Danielle du Toit and Kiera Floyd ignited the competition with a four-way tie for the lead in the opening round of the SuperSport Ladies Challenge.
The prestigious Gary Player Country Club course certainly lived up to its formidable reputation. Du Toit, Floyd, along with India’s Vidhatri Urs and Spain’s Harang Lee, each posted a two-under-par 70, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable battle on one of golf’s most challenging layouts.
The event has already earned a reputation for its ruthless nature, with only nine players managing to break par on day one of this Sunshine Ladies Tour event.

Du Toit’s round was a tale of two halves. Early trouble on the front nine – including a double-bogey on the par-four sixth hole – left her grappling with nerves.
Reflecting candidly on her start, she admitted, “I think I played the golf course scared. I was very tentative on every shot I hit and that snowballed. You can’t do that ever.
On the sixth I was in the bunker, and then I somehow could not get it on the green. It was just a mess,” she said.
Determined not to let a rocky beginning dictate her performance, Du Toit regained her composure on the back nine by rolling in four birdies to secure a share of the lead.
In a moment of unfiltered insight, she recalled, “I just looked at my caddie and said I am playing scared golf, now I am just going to line it up, hit it well and have some faith in it.
After that I started swinging freely and the momentum just rolled and a couple of putts fell.”
Yet, even with this impressive turnaround, Du Toit remains grounded, fully aware that the course punishes any errant shot.
“If you hit it in the rough here you are dead. I have my game plan to take out all the trouble and swing freely. Basically the same way I played back nine today,” she explained.
Not to be overlooked was defending champion Casandra Alexander, last week’s Jabra Ladies Classic winner, who found herself at odds with an unforgiving par-five 18th hole – a twist on tradition with the nines swapped for this tournament.
Her struggles culminated in an eight on that hole, leaving her with a one-over-par 73 for the day.
As the Sun City Challenge unfolds, every stroke and every decision on the course promises to add layers to an already riveting contest.
Golf fans and casual observers alike are in for a treat as these top players battle the elements, the course, and their own nerves in a contest that’s as unpredictable as it is compelling.
