Team England Triumphs at Inaugural Reignwood Icons of Football with 72-33 Victory

The inaugural Reignwood Icons of Football soared to new heights on Sunday as Lee Westwood’s Team England clinched a dazzling 72-33 triumph over Sergio Garcia’s Team World at Robinswood Golf Club in Bangkok.

This two-day Ryder Cup-style showdown had all the drama and flair you’d expect when you turn football icons loose on lush fairways.

Trailing 44-22 after Day One, Team World faced a steep climb. But Westwood’s green-clad squad showed why they’re as dominant with a wedge as they once were with a soccer ball.

Eight of the 12 singles matches swung England’s way to seal victory—earning them the winners’ jackets in the Series’ Asian debut.

Former World No.1 Westwood, never short on praise for his players, said, “I think a coach or a captain is only as good as the talent he’s got to work with, and this is a talented bunch.”

“They were obviously world-class footballers, but they’ve managed to transfer it onto the golf course this week. They’re all ultra-competitive, and we just had the edge.”

Garcia, whose team couldn’t quite complete the comeback, was equally proud: “The English team played great golf, but my guys did too, and I’m super proud of them.

We tried to make it close today, but they were just a little bit too good. They were clutch every single time they needed to be. But I’m still really proud of my team.”

Fans were treated to top-tier golf and the unmistakable competitive spark you’d expect from a field of legendary athletes.

One of the day’s marquee matchups pitted Robbie Fowler against Nemanja Vidić. This was no old-timers’ friendly—Fowler prevailed 6-2 and clearly relished the Liverpool vs. Manchester United rivalry.

“I know we’re not playing anymore, but it’s still always good to get one up on Manchester United as a Liverpool player and a Liverpool lad.

I know it’s England vs. the Rest of the World, but there’s always that element of club rivalries—it’s just what we do.

“The course has been magnificent, the clubhouse, the people… outstanding. Within the next year, this will be one of the best courses in Asia, guaranteed.

It’s a phenomenal place, and I’m so delighted I got to play a part in it—I’m not sure you’ll find many better facilities in this part of the world.”

Beyond the scorecards, players and spectators raved about the venue. Fowler praised the immaculate course, predicting it will rank among Asia’s best in a year’s time.

Vidić agreed, “Playing with some great players I haven’t seen in the past has been amazing, as well as getting the opportunity to play here in Bangkok on this great course.

It’s paradise. I’ve never played on a better golf course. And to have these spectators and media following what we’re doing—I’ve enjoyed every moment of the last two days.”

As that final putt dropped, the excitement shifted gears, and everyone started chatting about what 2026 might bring.
