From Golf to Glory: How Vilamoura is Revolutionising Sports Tourism

If you thought the Algarve couldn’t possibly get any better, brace yourself. The folks at DETAILS are adding a colossal, state-of-the-art sports centre to the already dazzling lineup of leisure attractions in Vilamoura.

Think of it as the crowning jewel in a place that’s practically bursting with gems.

DETAILS, the company responsible for managing Arrow Global’s hospitality and sporting assets in Vilamoura, has teamed up with Next Practice Partners (NPP) to get this ambitious project off the ground.

Now, for those of you who don’t keep a sports-insider Rolodex, NPP is a heavyweight in the world of innovative planning.

They’ve cut their teeth on big-name venues like the Disney/ESPN Wide World of Sports.

They’ve also partnered with headliners such as the City of Las Vegas (ever heard of it?), Los Angeles County (home of the 2028 Summer Olympics), and Indiana Sports Corp (an American pioneer in sports commissions).

This partnership will see NPP lead the concept, strategic, and business plan for a sports centre footprint that’s among the largest in Europe. Sprawling across 25 hectares, it’s set to open in 2026.

The plan includes the usual business and strategic development but also project consultancy and benchmarking.

And if you’re worried about sustainability, rest easy: this new sporting haven will be ESG compliant, focusing on the future, the environment, and the local community.

Now, it’s worth noting DETAILS already wields an impressive sports arsenal in Vilamoura.

That includes its golf portfolio—featuring the newly unveiled Els Club Vilamoura and the Old Course.

The latter just underwent a nifty renovation, ramping up playability, eco-friendly measures, and rolling out a brand-new clubhouse with a gastronomic twist.

Add to that the rejuvenated Equestrian Centre, set to return to international competition next fall, and you have an all-around sports paradise in the making.

“A New Era of Sports”

Nuno Sepulveda, Co-CEO at DETAILS, says this development is poised to transform the Algarve’s shining star.

“We have several innovative building projects in Vilamoura, but this sports centre is especially thrilling.

It marks a new era for sports in both Vilamoura and Portugal,” he explains. “Few luxury resorts in Europe can compete with what we’ll have on offer—a magnet for holidaymakers, property owners, families, and high-performance athletes alike.”

He’s talking big, but it doesn’t sound like mere puffery. According to Sepulveda, the plan is to make Vilamoura a pioneer in sporting excellence.

“We’re thrilled to work with NPP on this game-changing facility,” he adds.

A Bold Vision for the Future

Next Practice Partners’ Founder & CEO, Neelay Bhatt, shares the vision: “We believe sport has the power to inspire greatness and unite communities.

That happens when you push past the ordinary and embrace innovative thinking. This project is about more than just a building—it’s about creating a place where the spirit of sport thrives and passion for excellence converges,” he says.

By 2026, you’ll be seeing a sports centre that’s designed to uplift, challenge, and inspire everyone who steps inside.

And if that doesn’t get your adrenaline going, remember that Vilamoura also offers a shiny new residential project—Dom Pedro Residences—plus Hilton Vilamoura and three other four-star hotels under the Dom Pedro banner.

It’s a veritable playground for sports fans, sun-seekers, and anyone else looking for a slice of Portuguese paradise.

So, mark your calendars for 2026. Vilamoura’s future is looking brighter than ever, and this new sports centre is poised to be one heck of a showstopper.

Get ready, folks—Portugal is about to kick off a whole new era of sporting magic.
