2024 Nedbank Golf Challenge Winner: Johannes Veerman’s Triumph at Gary Player Country Club

Johannes Veerman delivered a thrilling performance to clinch his second DP World Tour title at the 2024 Nedbank Golf Challenge.

In a final round filled with drama, Veerman shot a remarkable 69 to finish one shot ahead of the competition at the iconic Gary Player Country Club.

Starting the day five strokes behind the leader, the American golfer showcased grit and precision, navigating the challenging Sun City course to set a clubhouse target of five under par.

His final scorecard featured six birdies and three bogeys, a testament to his resilience under testing conditions.

A Rollercoaster Start

Veerman’s Sunday began with a mix of highs and lows. After capitalizing on the par-five second hole for the fourth consecutive day, he immediately gave the shot back with a bogey at the third.

A stunning 20-foot birdie putt at the par-three fourth put him back on track, only for another bogey to follow at the fifth.

However, a 15-footer for birdie on the sixth and a straightforward tap-in on the ninth saw Veerman turn at three under for the round.

Pushing Ahead on the Back Nine

The back nine was where Veerman truly came alive. Birdies on the 11th and 14th holes, both courtesy of exquisite putting, propelled him to the top of the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, South African Aldrich Potgieter faltered, dropping shots at crucial moments, including a bogey at the 12th that opened the door for Veerman.

Despite a setback of his own with a bogey on the 16th, Veerman held his nerve. Pars on the final two holes secured his victory, with none of the chasing pack able to match his five-under-par total.

Johannes Veerman: “I didn’t have the best seasons the last two years. I put a lot of work in, me and my team – countless hours.

“To win this season, to start off this season with a win is indescribable.I knew I had a chance but actually thought I might have lost it on the 16th when I three-putted and missed that putt. That one really hurt but it doesn’t even matter!

“Words can’t describe things like this – it is a surreal feeling. Especially because I was kind of lurking around there the whole week, and I have been as well in previous tournaments for the last four or five that I have played and you don’t quite get the job done and finish fifth or eighth.

So to come in the back nine and to have a shot at it, and to walk away with the trophy is like, what just happened?!

“It’s amazing. This is my first time playing the Nedbank and when I showed up on 18 for my practice round I could not believe how big the grandstands where, I thought wow, is there really going to be that many people here this week, and sure enough it was full since Thursday. The whole atmosphere and vibe of this tournament was world-class.

“It means so much to me, my family, my team. My family sacrificed so much, they came out with me, we had a business that we sold that my wife ran, and she sold it so we could be together as a family out here on the road and travel with two kids, so it was a lot of work to say goodbye to friends and family for a while year, so to essentially have it pay off is relieving, satisfying, all of those words.”

The Final Standings

Potgieter, along with Romain Langasque and Matthew Jordan, finished tied for second, just one shot behind Veerman.

A bogey on the final hole cost Potgieter a chance at a playoff, denying the home crowd the prospect of a South African winner.

Veerman’s triumph not only marked his debut win at Sun City but also vaulted him to the top of the Race to Dubai and Opening Swing Rankings, cementing his place as one of the standout players of the season.
