When it comes to golf commentary, few bring the depth of expertise and lived experience that Dom Boulet offers.
The Hong Kong native, revered across the golfing world for his sharp insights and eloquent commentary, is set to elevate the Link Hong Kong Open with his firsthand knowledge of the tournament—both behind the mic and on the greens.
Boulet’s intimate connection to the event stems from his days as a competitor.
Having played the tournament nearly 20 times as both an amateur and professional, he boasts an impressive record that includes fourth and sixth-place finishes and numerous top-20 showings.
He’s shared fairways with legends like Payne Stewart, Peter Senior, and Scott Hoch, a testament to his pedigree in the sport before trading his clubs for a headset.
Reflecting on his own journey, Boulet said: “It was a fantastic experience. I remember my first one the best, playing 1984 with Peter Senior, a great Australian player.
Seeing the pros, how they play, at home in front of friends and family was a great experience.
Now it is a bigger event in terms of set up, but it has always been a huge event with big crowds, it was always exciting to play in front of good crowds.”
This year’s tournament promises more of that excitement, with Major winners Justin Rose and Patrick Reed headlining alongside rising star Tom Kim.
Boulet sees the event as a prime opportunity for up-and-coming players to test their mettle against world-class competitors.
A Storied Career and Unforgettable Moments
Boulet’s relationship with the Hong Kong Golf Club’s Composite Course runs deep.
As a member, he knows the intricacies of the layout better than most. He explained, “You must be precise, especially the front nine as there are dog legs and it is tree-lined, so you must hit some quality golf shots.
I might be a little bit biased, but I know a lot of the players very well, and they genuinely enjoy this golf course. It is a ‘second shot’ golf course.”
His on-course heroics include a standout moment in the 1990s when he holed a bunker shot on the 18th hole in front of nearly 10,000 spectators—a memory he cherishes as “the biggest roar” he had ever experienced.
The Evolution of Opportunities
Now a prominent voice in the Asian Tour and LIV Golf League, Boulet brings a unique perspective to the evolving landscape of professional golf.
As a member of the Asian Tour’s Board of Directors, he understands the transformative role of The International Series, which has created a direct pathway to the LIV Golf League.
“I’m jealous of these guys. The opportunities and money they have now, we never had.
The players appreciate it and are genuinely excited. It is a game changer; it has reignited the tour and given us a great outlook for the future.”
Boulet highlighted how The International Series has elevated the competition, with players striving harder for greater rewards.
He observed, “The quality of the golf has shot up as well – you can tell from the scores and the number between the leader and the cut mark.
You can see the quality of the field, the depth of the field The International Series is one of the factors, as these guys are working harder for bigger rewards.”
A Gateway to Greatness
Boulet is also enthusiastic about how The International Series serves as a springboard for talent.
He pointed to Kieran Vincent, who secured a spot in the LIV Golf League last season.
“Think about Kieran Vincent last season on Legion XIII – he won his place onto the LIV Golf League, and he got the chance to play practice rounds and hang with Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton all season.
Goodness me, for a young man in his early 20s, what an incredible learning experience and opportunity.”
The ripple effect is also reaching the US college system, with more players considering The International Series a viable route to the professional big leagues.
He shared, “I think what golfers are very good at, is they like to talk. And as big a game it is, it is also a very small industry, so players all know each other.
And I’m sure the likes of Andy Ogletree, who won the rankings race last year and joined the HyFlyers GC, went back and spoke about the well-run events, the purse, the intense competition. It is a great option.”
