Set your calendars for a clash of the titans at The Hong Kong Golf Club this November 21-24, where the LINK Hong Kong Open will roll out the green carpet for the likes of Martin Kaymer, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose, and Korea’s young gun Tom Kim.
With a hefty US$2 million prize purse on the line, this spectacle, staged as part of The International Series on the Asian Tour, isn’t just a tournament—it’s a battleground where legends come to play.
Martin Kaymer and Patrick Reed are no strangers to this course, having teed off here earlier in the year for LIV Golf Hong Kong.
While Kaymer, the cool-headed skipper from Germany, finished in a respectable 21st place, the feisty American Reed, a golfer who doesn’t know the meaning of quit, landed a bit further back at 29th.
But scores aside, it’s their enthusiasm for Hong Kong’s hospitality that speaks volumes.
Kaymer gushes about the place, “Every time we come to Hong Kong it’s not only the golf course that is fantastic but also the people are friendly and very supportive.
They are great golf fans. The hospitality of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong people, the Hong Kong government, is fantastic,” said Kaymer, winner of the 2010 PGA Championship and US Open in 2014.
The German also has a deep connection with the city, as the 2006 edition of the Hong Kong Open was his first ever as an international touring professional.
And if you ask Kaymer, he’ll tell you Hong Kong is where he cut his teeth on the international circuit, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with some golfing greats back in 2006. “I was standing on the putting green and right next to me was Miguel-Angel Jiménez.
Ian Poulter was there too. I was quite intimidated by it because just a few months before I was playing on the German professional tour and all of a sudden I’m standing on the putting green next to these Ryder Cup players and these big boys,” Kaymer recalled.
“I was just trying to stay away from them and not interrupt their practice. So it was funny and a totally new experience for me back then.”
Patrick Reed’s tale isn’t too different. With a T3 finish back in 2015 and a slew of top-10 spots in this season’s LIV Golf series, Reed’s no stranger to the limelight here. The man’s a regular, and Hong Kong might as well be his second home.
The tournament itself has earned a nod from none other than Gary Player, who calls it “Asia’s Major.”
This isn’t just another tournament; it’s a milestone event in the 135th year of The Hong Kong Golf Club. It’s a piece of golfing history.
This year’s Hong Kong Open is pivotal as the eighth event of the season in The International Series, heralding a grand finale that will see the series move on to Qatar and wrap with the lavish US$5 million PIF Saudi International.
There’s more than just money at stake; the top points-scorer will snag a spot in next season’s LIV Golf League, and the top 32 players advance to the LIV Golf Promotions event, where one golfer will punch their ticket to the 2025 roster.
In the past three years, The International Series has spanned continents from Asia to Europe and the MENA region, growing in prestige and popularity.
In 2023, the Hong Kong Open was lauded as The International Series Tournament of the Year and scooped up a Players’ Choice award for Course of the Year.
For those wanting to witness this storied tournament, the gates are wide open with complimentary admission on November 21-22.
If you’re planning to be there for the weekend rounds, tickets are a steal at HK$200 a day or HK$300 for the full weekend. Pop over to KLOOK and grab your pass to golfing greatness.
