In a thrilling display of skill under the Italian sun, Gunner Wiebe has emerged as the frontrunner at the Italian Open presented by Regione Emilia-Romagna.
His steady second round of 69 has nudged him into a slender one-stroke lead heading into the weekend at the Adriatic Golf Club.
The American ace began the day in a tightly contested three-way tie atop the leaderboard, fueled by his impressive opening round of 64.
However, Wiebe faced early challenges, navigating a level-par front nine that tested his resolve.
A bogey on the 17th momentarily set him back after a hard-earned gain on the 15th.
Undeterred, Wiebe’s resilience shone through on the back nine, where he secured crucial birdies on the first and fifth holes, bolstering his bid for supremacy.
With steely composure, the 35-year-old closed out his round with four consecutive pars, wrapping up a solid nine-under-par total for the tournament thus far.
Gunner Wiebe: “I don’t think any of us had the chance to play boring. The conditions were really tough.
The course is starting to firm up quite a bit. You just have to pay attention. There’s not really a shot where you can – I don’t want to say mail it in – but you have to be on your mental side from the get-go with how tricky the wind was.
Not near as boring, but tactical. Arguably, I might have played better today than yesterday. You can judge by score, sure, but I think the way I played today was a bit sharper.
“I think if you get off in the morning, some of the guys that have an earlier time tomorrow, with the wind down, there might some chances to get out and score.
If the weather maintains and the wind stays up, I think you’ll see a pretty condensed leaderboard and probably a lot of guys who will have a chance.
Whether it’s me or somebody else, someone is going to have to play very good the last two rounds to hold the trophy.”
Hot on his heels is Germany’s rising star, Jannik de Bruyn, whose unexpected entry into the Italian Open has proven fortuitous.
Originally slated for the European Challenge Tour’s La Vaudreuil Golf Challenge, de Bruyn seized the opportunity with two impressive rounds of 67, positioning himself just one stroke behind Wiebe.
The leaderboard remains tightly packed with contenders vying for the prestigious title.
Among those at seven under par are Marcus Kinhult of Sweden, Denmark’s Sebastian Friedrichsen, Spain’s Adrian Otaegui, and South Africa’s Brandon Stone. Canadian Aaron Cockerill and India’s Shubhankar Sharma are close behind, sharing seventh place at six under par.
Further down the standings, a cluster of fourteen players are tied for ninth place at five under par, including Italian favourites Edoardo Molinari and Andrea Pavan, who are sure to draw passionate support from the home crowd.
