If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the second day of the 2025 Team Cup at the Abu Dhabi Golf Resort, it’s that Great Britain & Ireland are enjoying themselves far more than their rivals—and they’ve got the points to prove it.
With a commanding 11-4 lead over Continental Europe, GB&I are now just two points away from sealing the trophy in Sunday’s singles session.
Fleetwood’s Foursomes Magic
Tommy Fleetwood, who seems incapable of doing anything but win when paired with someone else, was once again at the heart of the GB&I charge.
In the morning session, he teamed up with his skipper, Justin Rose, to edge out Continental Europe Captain Francesco Molinari and partner Julien Guerrier by a 2Up margin.
Not satisfied, Fleetwood switched partners in the afternoon—this time joining Jordan Smith—and casually beat the same Continental pair 3&2.
With three points from three matches, Fleetwood might need to invest in a bigger suitcase just to bring home all his bragging rights.
McKibbin Stays Perfect
Sharing the undefeated spotlight is Northern Irish newcomer Tom McKibbin. He joined Aaron Rai early Saturday to dispatch Rasmus Højgaard and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 4&3, then paired up with Matthew Jordan to see off Thorbjørn Olesen and Niklas Nørgaard 2Up in the afternoon.
Clearly, McKibbin is determined to make his name stick in the minds of golf fans—and possibly on the scoreboard for years to come.
A Glimmer of Hope for Continental Europe
Even though GB&I have pretty much run the show so far, the French duo of Romain Langasque and Matthieu Pavon has been doing its utmost to keep Continental Europe afloat.
After winning their fourball on Friday, they carried on with two more victories in Saturday’s foursomes, defeating Laurie Canter and Smith 3&2 in the morning and then dispatching Rai and Rose 4&2 in the afternoon.
While that’s a silver lining for Europe, they still have a mountain to climb on Sunday.
The Road to Sunday
With an 11-4 advantage, GB&I need just two more points to reach the magic number of 13 and claim the 2025 Team Cup.
Continental Europe, meanwhile, would have to pull off an all-out Sunday sweep—grabbing all nine available points—to retain the title.
It’s a tall order, but stranger things have happened in golf. Sunday’s singles will reveal if GB&I can slam the door on Europe or if Molinari’s men can script a comeback for the ages.
Either way, buckle up for what promises to be a thrilling finish in Abu Dhabi. And if you’re looking for the official highlight reel, just remember where you heard it first—because no matter how it ends, the 2025 Team Cup has already given us a boatload of drama and a heap of stellar performances.
